What does it mean to be Obese?

You might think it strange that I start of by asking the question - What does it mean to be Obese?

Why am I making a big deal of this? Well for starters, I didn't think I was overweight (I don't look overweight). I really found out that I needed to loose weight by visiting my G.P. The first couple of times I visited my G.P I just ignored the advice, really thinking he's gotta to be wrong! I just didn't believe it and passed it off - Me? Loosing Weight, that had to be a joke didn't it?

so, there is a scientific measure for assessing whether an individual is Obese. That this the BMI or Body Mass Index. The magical figure for being classed as Overweight is >25. A BMI >30 means that the individual is Obese. It should be noted that these figures are applicable to Adults. That is persons over the age of 18.

Ok - at least we can now measure ourselves (or get a health professional) to determine our BMI. So what you may ask. Well in my case my BMI was a little over 25 (I did say I didn't look overweight and to be honest no one has ever said I looked overweight). It could be the loose clothing I wear, but that is another story! So in my own circumstances the effect was that I had high blood pressure - I can safely say that I was shocked to learn that as well - given that I didn't actually feel ill. Bye the way, I originally visited the G.P for a completely unrelated reason!

The aim of this blog has been to help you determine if you are overweight. Future articles will look at ways of loosing those pounds.
